Week Two, Session 1
Understand - This is my secondary research so far although i need to research more to gather enough information for the context of body for each spread. (Primary evidence in workbook) I need to g back to my sites and gather more Primary research too.
Historical content of sites
Botanical Gardens
gardens have been around for around 3000 years. The first were located in Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Romans where also keen gardeners and were aware of the medical properties in the plants (as were the Monks). Flowers became a large celebration of the gods and ceremonies. The first monastic gardens where created in the eighth century.
The Botanical Gardens cover around 25 hectares of land in Wellington city. Over the years it has had native forest, conifers, plant collections and seasonal displays as well as live music and events every now and then. The Botanical Gardens where established in 1868 and was managed by the New Zealand Institute. in 1891 Wellington City Council took over the management and developed the following gardens/ displays
- Lady Norwood Rose Garden (1950)
-Bogonia house (1960)
-Treehouse Visitor Centre (1990)
The most direct way of getting to the Botanical Gardens is to ride Wellingtons Cable car which takes you directly from Lampton Quay to the Gardens. The botanical garden have plenty of offer such as a kids play area, duck pond, cafe, paths, sculptures and many more. They intend to create an interactive kids garden in the future so that the kids can create some o the garden themselves
Mount Victoria
Mt Vic is a very popular walking, running and scenic spot where there are multiple paths ad tracks to tend to each difficulty of fitness. Mt Vic is apart of the town belt and was previously a film location for Lord of the Rings, directed by Sir Peter Jackson. Mt Vic has 360 degree view of the city, harbour and the ocean to the south. It has car and buss access by Alexandra Rd and has track which lead from Oriental Parade and Majoribanks Street. The Maori name for the Mt Vic is Tangi Te Keo and is the approximate hight of 196 meters. The legend of a land-locked lake which was home to a large and active Taniwha (sea monster) named Whataitai, who forged a passage through to the sea which created the entrance to the harbour. It is believed that Mt Vic (Tangi Te Keo) is named after the soul of Whataitai.
Eastbourne
Eastbourne is a popular costal location which had multiple bays which link together to create a path from start to finish. it begins with Lowry Bay then Days bay, Eastbourne and Pencarrow Head. Eastbourne was name dafter a seaside resort in England. Pencarrow Head has a memorial stand of the Wahine ferry which was pushed into rocks at Baring Head a storm in 1968 which was seen from the Pencarrow and eastern shoreline. Along with this it has multiple tracks and beach walks, bike hire and great swimming locations
