Week Three, session 2
Patterns and symbols

After looking and critiquing my previous designs i realised that most of the patterns that i had used were not mine so i decided to crate some of my own using illustrator. wanted to make a pattern for each site so that they could be recognised accordingly.

Firstly, i created a flower with the line tool in illustrator which represents the botanical aspect of the Botanical Gardens. This was hard to create because i had to make every single line. i think that it works well because i have given the flower some tones and shadows so that it stands out and doesn't look flat. Once i had made the flower i tried placing it on a spree, making it a pattern. I did this via photoshop and trailed it in different colours. The colour that worked the best was the pale pink because it represents the colour of the flowers but also makes you want to sniff the air and smell the sweet smell. I trailed it in green and blue but it didn't work as well, because it was too similar to the greens and blues in the there sites. After making this pattern i trailed a collaged style pattern which i could then cut out shapes to use. I think this works well because of the overlapping of the lines of the flowers. It represents the displays of flowers but also the freeness of the gardens and their growth.

Secondly, i created some leaf and plant patterns to use for my Mt Victoria site. Because the walk up to the lookout is dense bush and forests i wanted to make a collection of patterns rather that an individual pattern such as the flower. I made this striped leaf pattern in illustrator using the line tool and then copied them over to photoshop to create a collage. i think that the overlapping of the leaves works well and it shows the density of the bush and forest life at Mt Vic. I also wanted to trial the simple pattern style so i made another leaf on illustrator in which i made into a pattern on photoshop. this leaf is more cartoonish and doesn't draw as much attention away from the main design. I trailed this in different tones of green but the pale green worked best because the other greens were too dark for the black outline of the leaf pattern. Finally i crated a leave pattern which resembles a vine which i could use singularly or together as a pattern. I like this design better when it is multiplied together to make a pattern because it looks like the vine/ plants have taken over the area (similar to the bush and forests at Mt Vic)

For my Eastbourne site patterns, i didn't want them to be cheesy or cliche such as a wiggly line representing a wave or M's representing seagulls so i looked back at the patterns of my visual matrix of Eastbourne and made this pattern with a similar approach. This pattern works well because it represents the waves/ currents and has texture to it too.

I trialled using different mediums like water paints to create different effects. I don't think that these patterns and textures suit my theme and sites (more suitable to for water activities) but trialling these meant i could head in the right direction for my next designs.

Symbols- I got these symbols off www.thenounprogect.net and they are for each of my sites. I want to work with these symbol ideas to create the secondary information/ symbol aspect of my brochure but i want to design mine myself to create a individual piece of work.
