week 3 - independent study

colour palettes

For each location i want to have a colour palette which resembles the colours of the location for example, Eastbourne would be blue, Mount Victoria would be green and the Botanical Gardens would be pink/red. I looked back at my mood board which we did in week 1 to see if i could improve my colour palettes. The green/ brown palette is for Mount Victoria and represent the grass, forna, earth, dirt, sky and the view. The blue/ yellow palette is for Eastbourne and represents the sky, sea, sand and earth. The pink/red palette is for the Botanical Gardens an represent the flowers and forna.

Inspiration
Finding stylistic approaches

I was looking for inspiration for the style of my brochure because i wasn't entirely sure what i should do. My research was on designspiration.com and it helped me to produce some designs which i then laid out in my indesign document spreads.

I like how there is a main colour (spot colour) shown through out. I want to do something like the with the colour palettes for each location.

I like how the line of colour goes infant and behind the text box and how it creates depth. i want to explore depth and making colours work like this.

I like the geometric approach to this and how the text overlaps the images and that the images are all inline and in the same place on each page.

This is a student example of stream which i like because of the simplicity of it. I want to try the simple approach to my design and then add more detail to it if it needs it.

Developed compositions

from my first initial mock-ups i made these designs which i then put into my indesign document spreads. With these designs i went for the simplistic look and used circles as a representation of a journey. I used imagery of the sites, textures that i have made myself and colours that relate back to the colour palettes of each location.

This collage is the final of my Botanical Gardens location (other are in physical workbook).  In this i incorporated the colours of the palettes i created earlier. I made the flower and vine patterns on illustrator with the paintbrush tool and then transferred them into my designs. i also added a vector images of the outline the city view and used the photos i took myself too. The feel of this is very warm and sweet, which i was looking at doing. The lines represent paths (as if you were following them while on a walk). I think that this design works well but it might be too simple for the spread and it might separate itself from the text too much.

This design is the final of the Eastbourne location (others are in workbook). For this i used the photos that i took myself in this, apart from the imager of the waves (that was sourced from google images). I created my own wave pattern on illustrator and filled it with the blue colour, added the same city view vector image and added in the colours which relate back to the earlier colour palettes. once again the photos are cropped in circles to represents a journey and they lines represent a path which both refer to walking and the forward movement. I think that this collage works well because of the extra block of colour (high opacity blue) making it more likely to fit better in the indesign document.

This is the final design of the Mount Victoria location (others in book). I created the leaf patterns on illustrator which i think brings a lot of texture and detail to the design. I added the photo of the view of the city which i took myself and colours from the earlier colour palette for this location. In the other two designs i have had more than one photo of the area but i think that the outer high opacity green box and the bigger green circle with the illustrator patterns on top, give it enough detail to explain the location. I also included the vector image of the city outline. The circles represent a journey and the lines represent a path.

the peak

MOUNT VICTORIA

Rising 196m above the city, Mount Victoria is a Wellington must-do. Enjoy a challenging walk up to be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Wellington city, harbour and beyond. Mount Victoria has 14 walking tracks which differ in difficulty levels and it is included in the town belt which is accessible to the Central business District.

THINGS TO DO
Majority of the tracks lead up to the lookout which presents breathtaking views and it is a great place to have a picnic and watch the ferries and cruise ships come into the harbour, the planes land and take off on the runway or settle in at the perfect spot to watch the sunrise or sunset. If you are not there for the views and are more of a fitness junkie then Mount Vic is the perfect track for you. Each track is unique and different and can be accessed my car or bus by Alexandra Road or Oriental Parade and Majoribanks Street by foot. Mount Victoria is the home to a location of a film set go the Lord of The Rings film why is the perfect trip for Peter Jackson fans.

the bays

LARWY BAY YOURK BAY, DAYS BAY, EASTBOURNE AND PENCARROW HEAD.

Eastbourne is a little seaside paradise which has a lovely harbour view of Wellington city with a beautiful backdrop of a beech forest. This is a contrast to the hustle of the city. The journey takes you through the bays beginning at Lawry bay which takes you the small town and suburban homes and then through to Pencarrow head where you see the grand entrance of the Wellington Harbour.

THINGS TO DO
Eastbourne is a must do place to go. It has fantastic views and has many activities and things to do. On a nice day they bays can get quite busy but the warm sand and the sound of the waves crashing is something that you can't miss.

Days Bay is a very popular beach with golden sand a d a great swimming area, but it can fill up quite fast so be quick and get your perfect spot. Another popular attraction is the Dominion Post ferry which travels in 25 minutes from Queens wharf in Wellington Harbour to the wharf in Days bay. There are also cafes, restaurants, bars, art galleries, a yacht club, an outside swimming pool, a library, childrens playground, public toilets and the Butterfly Creek native bush track.

the garden

BOTANICAL GARDENS

The Botanical Gardens is a peacnfulsummers day delight. It has over 26 hectares of unique landscape, native bush, exotic forests and colourful floral displays.

The Botanicals Gardens are located above Wellington Central Business District and can be accessed by the cable car on Lampton Quay, Glenmore Street, Salamanca Road and Upland Road. The Botanical Gardens has so much to offer for all ages and walking abilities.

THINGS TO DO
the Botanical Gardens offers relaxing scenery and a great view of Wellington City. There are multiple walking tracks tat lead you around the whole of the gardens and differ in length and steepness. It is a great place for observing the garden like while having a picnic, going for a family walk or testing your fitness on the steepest tracks.

It also includes a duckpond, the Bognia House, the award-winning Lady Norwood Rose garden, children player, the visitor information centre, the Sundail of Human Involvement, cafe and the Bolton Street Memorial Park.

Indesign document layout
laying out my first designs with text.

Critique of layout in class

  • too separate, the spreads don't intertwine or work with each other.
  • wrong font for theme/ style.
  • more detail in designs to convey location more.
  • make body copy smaller.
  • fix the negative space in body copy.

self critique: I don't like the layout of this design and text. I think that it is too separate and simple. event when i added a part of the design onto the text spread. I used Sans Serif font which doesn't match the style of my brochure. I think that i need to use univers so that it os easier to read and follow. I am not sure if i like my style of brochure and i a not sure if the simple style is working for me. I am going to do some more research into design styles which might work better for me and my topic.
