Week Two, Session 2

Define - Now that i have finalised my theme (Walkways in Wellington) and sites (Botanical Gardens, My Victoria and Eastbourne) i can move on to finding potential in my work. Now i can sort and find the trends and patterns in my information. I need to identify Problems and opportunities in my work and critique it as the process goes on.

Finding inspiration

Sources: designspration.com, Poster design big size value (Massey library), New Masters of Poster Design volume two (John Foster, Massey library)

This design is from designspiration.com. I chose it because i like the way that they have used symbolic images to communicate. This has photographic imagery and layered with different techniques of design (indesign, photoshop, etc). This reflects an adventurous attitude and would most likely be used for a tramping, mountain walk or travel guide. The colour palette is neutral with earthy tones. There is no type, only symbols. There is depth in this design , it looks 3D apart from the symbols in front.

This is from 'New Masters of Poster Design Volume Two' I chose this because i like the simplicity of the design and i want to keep my designs simple and easy to read and understand. This design was made by silkscreen. It reflects a calm and peaceful attitude. The only colour is the background (which i like), there is a small amount of type in the bottom corner which doesn't draw the attention away from the imagery, and there is little form because the image is flat although the shading creates some depth. this could be used for something delicate like a perfume or something similar.

This is from 'New Masters of Poster Design Volume Two'. I chose this because i like how abstract it is and i want to make my designs very abstract. I also like the shapes and different dimensions it is creating. This creates a moody or dominant attitude as it is dark and looks like it is trying to get away from you. Only colour is grey but there are variations of tones in it (lighting). No type. looks 3D, like it is squirming around and trying to move. This could be used for something like coffee or movement because it looks like dripping.

These designs are from 'New Masters of Poster Design Volume Two'. I chose these designs because i like the shapes made and the shapes inside of other shapes made. I want to do my designs like this; simple background and a hierarchy of design in the middle. These all give off a fierce, dramatic and strong attitude. the colours are very neutral but are enhanced with layering, opacity and lighting/ shading. No Type. Look as if the are moving/ growing, gives them a sense of depth and shape. These would be good more something that includes emotion and movement, possibly dance.

This is from 'Poster Design Big Size Visuals'. I chose this design because i liked how the map was inside the tree and if you don't take a closer look it looks completely normal. This creates a calm and grounded attitude. The only colour is green which is shown on the tree and cat logo which represents nature. The type balances out the chair opposite to it and doesn't take the importance away from the tree. Everything looks like a flat image apart from the chair. This would be good for a nature or park poster.

Problems and opportunities in work

I think that it will be hard to communicate feelings in my designs such as the feeling of smelling the flowers at the Botanical Gardens, smelling the salty sea air in Eastbourne and feeling the wind blowing through your hair at Mt Victoria. I want people to experience these feelings and emotions while looking at my designs. If i can communicate these feelings and emotions it will be a great opportunity for my work and will turn out as a success.

patterns/ trends in research

In my reproach i have realised that my sites all have similarities and differences which all work well together because they are all different sites and offer different things but they still all relate in some way. For example,
